Agbada, Kaftan or Senator: What Is the Difference?
Three classic styles of Nigerian menswear, explained simply, with when to wear each one.

If you are new to Nigerian menswear, the names can be confusing. Agbada, kaftan and senator are all long tunics worn with matching trousers, but they are cut differently and suit different occasions.
Agbada
The agbada is the grandest of the three. It is a three-piece outfit: a wide, flowing outer robe, a long inner tunic and matching trousers. The outer robe is open at the sides and falls to the ankle, so it moves as you walk and is usually folded back over the shoulders. Embroidery on the chest is the focal point.
Wear it for: weddings, engagements, chieftaincy events, milestone birthdays and any occasion where you want to make an entrance.
Kaftan
A kaftan is a long tunic, often reaching the knee or below, worn with matching trousers. It is simpler than an agbada but still formal, and the length gives it a calm, elegant line. At TAB our kaftans are collarless with a round neckline and cut straight, so they never flare at the hem.
Wear it for: Friday prayers, Eid, family gatherings, receptions and dinners.
Senator
The senator is the most versatile. It is a tailored tunic that sits around mid thigh, worn with straight trousers in the same fabric. The shorter length and closer fit make it feel modern and sharp, and it is easy to dress up with a fila or down with clean loafers.
Wear it for: church, parties, business events, birthdays and weekends.
How to choose
- For the most formal events, choose an agbada.
- For a long, elegant silhouette with less volume, choose a kaftan.
- For something you will wear again and again, choose a senator.
Whichever you choose, fit matters more than anything. The shoulders should sit on your shoulders, the sleeves should end at the wrist, and the trousers should break lightly on your shoes.
