How to Wear a Fila: A Guide to the Gobi Cap

The fila finishes Yoruba native wear. Here is how to choose one, fit it and wear it with confidence.

Wine Pinstripe Fila by TAB Wears

The fila is the traditional Yoruba cap, and the gobi is its most recognisable style: a tall cylinder of fabric that is folded over and worn tilted to one side. Worn well, it turns a good outfit into a complete one.

Choosing your fila

Most filas are made from aso oke, a hand-woven Yoruba cloth with a firm texture and a slight sheen. Look for three broad types:

  • Bold stripes in two or three colours, which add energy to a plain outfit.
  • Plain textured weaves, which suit embroidered outfits because they do not compete.
  • Embroidered filas with a single motif and band, for the most formal occasions.

Getting the size right

A fila should sit snugly, with the band flush against your head all the way round and no gap at the sides. Measure around your head just above your ears and eyebrows with a soft tape. Our filas are sized from 56cm to 61cm. If you are between sizes, choose the larger one.

Folding and tilting

The gobi is folded so the top falls to one side. Most men tilt it towards the right or left depending on preference. There is no single rule, so choose the side that suits your face and stay with it. Keep the fold crisp and the front upright for a sharp look.

Matching your fila to your outfit

  • Pick up one colour from your embroidery for the cap.
  • With a plain outfit, a striped fila adds interest.
  • With heavy embroidery, choose a plain or tonal fila.

Caring for your fila

Store it with tissue inside to hold its shape, away from direct sunlight. Spot clean where possible and steam lightly to refresh it. Avoid crushing it in a bag.
