What to Wear to a Nigerian Wedding as a Man in the UK
Traditional ceremony, church, reception and aso ebi. Here is how to get it right, whether it is your first owambe or your fiftieth.

Nigerian weddings in the UK are some of the best dressed events of the year. Most follow the same rhythm as weddings at home: a traditional engagement, a church or registry ceremony, and a reception that runs late. Each part has its own dress code, and getting it right is a sign of respect to the couple and their families.
The traditional engagement
This is where native wear matters most. For a Yoruba ceremony, an agbada with a matching fila is the classic choice for close family and older guests. A well cut senator or kaftan with a fila is perfectly correct for everyone else. Choose rich, solid colours and keep the embroidery at the neckline and chest so the outfit looks considered rather than busy.
If the families have chosen aso ebi, the shared fabric or colour for guests, wear it. It is how the couple sees who came to celebrate with them. If you are not sure, ask the person who invited you before you buy.
The church or registry ceremony
Many couples hold a white wedding as well as a traditional one, often on a different day. A tailored two-piece suit is the safe choice here. Navy, charcoal and deep brown always look right, and a suit with a clean waistband and no belt loops keeps the line sharp in photographs.
The reception
Receptions are where Nigerian style really shows. Guests often change from a suit into native wear, or arrive in native wear from the start. A senator in a deep colour such as wine, navy or olive, worn with a fila and polished loafers, is right for almost any reception.
Choosing colours
- Follow the aso ebi colours if the couple has announced them.
- Avoid white or ivory head to toe unless the dress code asks for it, as the couple may be wearing it.
- Deep tones such as wine, plum, moss and navy photograph well under hall lighting.
- Match your fila to your outfit, or pick one shade in the embroidery for the cap.
Shoes and finishing touches
With native wear, choose leather loafers or slip-ons in black, brown or tan. With a suit, wear Oxford or brogue shoes. Make sure everything is steamed and pressed the day before. A crisp garment does more for an outfit than any accessory.
Ordering in time
Allow at least three to four weeks before the wedding if you want anything made to measure, and longer in the busy summer season. If you are ordering for a group, share the event date in the special request box at checkout so we can plan your order around it.
Questions people ask
Can I wear a suit to a Nigerian wedding?
Yes. A tailored suit is ideal for the church or registry ceremony, and it is fine for the reception too. Many guests change into native wear for the reception.
What is aso ebi?
Aso ebi is a fabric or colour chosen by the couple or their families for guests to wear, so that friends and family look coordinated on the day. If the couple has announced aso ebi, wearing it is a sign of support.
Do I have to wear a fila?
It is not compulsory, but a fila completes Yoruba native wear and is expected at many traditional ceremonies, especially for close family.
How early should I order my outfit?
Order at least three to four weeks before the event, or earlier for made to measure pieces and in the summer wedding season.
